We pass requests from anywhere in the Auckland region to the same independent pest control business, so the service doesn't change by suburb. What does change is the kind of house and section, and that shapes where a technician looks first. These notes are general patterns, not rules; your street may be the exception.
Older timber homes: central suburbs and inner North Shore
Villas and bungalows in places like Grey Lynn, Mt Eden, Ponsonby, Devonport and Northcote have suspended timber floors, sub-floor spaces, scrim and board linings in some rooms, and plenty of small gaps around old joinery. Ants move through the structure easily, so trails can surface far from where they enter. Treatments in these homes usually include the sub-floor perimeter and the base of the walls, and careful baiting around kitchens and bathrooms. If you see winged insects or soft timber, ask the technician to look for borer at the same visit.
Newer homes on concrete slabs: growth areas north, west and south
Subdivisions such as Millwater, Hobsonville, Westgate, Flat Bush and Drury are mostly built on slabs with long runs of concrete paths and driveways. Landcare Research describes concrete surfaces as ant highways where surface sprays break down fast. Trails here often follow the slab edge and come in under doors, around the garage, or through service penetrations and recessed lights. Treatment tends to focus on the slab perimeter, joins between paving and walls, and cladding cavities.
Bush-edge sections: West Auckland and the Hibiscus Coast
Homes beside bush in places like Titirangi, the Waitākere foothills or the hills behind Orewa have more native ants around them, and most of those never come inside or cause harm. The usual indoor problem is still an introduced ant arriving with garden plants, mulch or building materials. A good technician will tell you what not to treat, and will keep products away from streams and bush where possible.
Coastal and holiday homes
Baches and coastal homes that sit empty for weeks can come back to a well-established trail. If you're arriving for summer, check the kitchen and bathrooms first, and remember that a property left empty gives a colony time to move in undisturbed. Getting a treatment booked before a long stay works better than calling on the first night.
Apartments and townhouses
Ants in apartments usually come from a shared wall, a service duct or the garden at ground level. Treating one unit on its own often has a limited effect. If you rent or own in a body corporate, let the manager know; a building-wide treatment works better. See rentals and businesses.
Rural edges: Rodney, Franklin and the islands
Lifestyle blocks bring larger sections, sheds, water tanks and stock troughs into play. Treatment is usually limited to the house and the area immediately around it, not the whole block. Ask before booking whether your location is covered and whether a travel charge applies.
Ant control questions
Is there a different price for my suburb?
Price is driven by the house and the job, not the suburb, though remote addresses can attract a travel charge. The cost page covers what changes the price.
Do you cover Waiheke and the other islands?
Ask when you call. Island jobs depend on ferry timing and are confirmed case by case.
