Reading an ant control quote

Two quotes for the same house can differ by a hundred dollars and still both be fair, or one can be cheap because it leaves out the part that matters. Here's how to read what's actually on offer.

A good ant control quote names what will be treated (inside, outside or both, and which rooms or areas), the type of products and where they'll go, whether a follow-up visit is included, whether GST is included, and how long to keep people and pets off treated areas. Published Auckland "from" prices run about $210 to $255 incl GST for one area or a small home and about $340 to $400 incl GST for inside and outside of a typical three-bedroom house.

Why it should be in writing

A written quote protects both sides. You know what you're paying for, and the business knows what it's promised. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, services must be done with reasonable care and skill, be fit for the purpose you asked for, and, if no price was agreed, cost a reasonable price. A written quote makes the price and purpose clear from the start.

Prices given over the phone without anyone seeing the property are estimates at best. The ant problem in a three-bedroom villa with a big garden and a deck is a different job from a three-bedroom townhouse on a slab.

What a good quote names

A good quote is short but specific. Check that yours covers each of these.

  • Scope: inside, outside or both, and which rooms, walls, decks or garden areas
  • Species: what the technician believes the ant is
  • Method: product types (bait, non-repellent spray, granules) and where they go
  • Follow-up: whether one is included, when, and the cost if extra
  • Price: the total, and whether GST is included
  • Safety: re-entry times for people and pets, and anything you need to do
  • Recheck: what happens if trails persist after the treatment

The GST trap

Some Auckland businesses publish prices including GST and some excluding it, and at least one says it isn't GST-registered. A quote of $320 plus GST is about $368 in total; $340 including GST is $340. When comparing, convert everything to the same basis. If a quote doesn't say, ask.

Inside, outside or both

An inside-only treatment is cheaper, but for most Auckland ant problems the colony lives outside. Published prices reflect this: an interior or exterior treatment alone starts around $210, while both together start around $340 incl GST. An inside-only quote can make sense for a contained black house ant problem, but for Argentine ants it usually just buys a few weeks.

The follow-up question

A follow-up visit is standard for Argentine and white-footed house ant jobs. A quote that doesn't mention one isn't necessarily worse, but it may mean you'll pay again in a month. Ask directly: is a follow-up included, when will it happen, and what does it cost if it's extra? How long treatment takes explains why it's often needed.

Guarantees and warranties

Some businesses offer a warranty period on ant treatments, often with conditions, such as residential properties only, a limited number of bedrooms, or requiring you not to use your own products. Read the conditions. A warranty is only as good as its terms, and a long warranty with many exclusions may be worth less than a clear follow-up included in the price.

Red flags

A few things should make you pause. Be wary of a firm price before anyone has seen the property, pressure to sign up for a long contract on the spot, a quote that won't name any products, claims that a single spray will clear Argentine ants for good, or reluctance to answer questions about qualifications. Choosing a company covers what to ask.

Commercial and body corporate quotes

For businesses and shared buildings, quotes should also cover the number of visits, out-of-hours work, written reports for each visit, which units or areas are included, and notice to residents or staff. These are quoted after a site survey; no Auckland operator we checked publishes commercial prices.

Ant control questions

Is the cheapest quote the worst?

Not necessarily. Compare scope, follow-up and GST first. A cheap quote that covers less may cost more over the season.

Should I get more than one quote?

It's reasonable, especially for larger jobs. Compare like with like.

Can the price change on the day?

It shouldn't without your agreement. If the technician finds more than expected, they should explain and re-quote before treating.
