These explainers answer the things people ask once the first trail has turned into a summer-long problem: why it keeps coming back, what the ants are, where they live, what's safe around children and animals, and what a fair treatment looks like. Each one gives the short answer first, then the detail, and points to the service page if you decide you want a technician to look.

How these are written
Each explainer starts from a primary New Zealand source: Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research for ant biology and control, Auckland Council's pest plan for local rules, the Ministry for Primary Industries for fire ants and biosecurity, Tenancy Services for rentals and the National Poisons Centre for safety. Where we give general practice rather than a cited fact, we say so.
Prices quoted in explainers come from figures Auckland pest control businesses publish themselves, gathered on the cost page with dates and links. We don't name brands of pest product, and we don't rank companies. If something here is out of date or wrong, email [email protected] and we'll check it.
Where to start
If ants have just appeared, start with Argentine ant season and telling house ants apart. If you've already sprayed and they came back, read why sprays scatter ants. If you're about to book, preparing for a treatment and reading an ant quote will save time on the day.
