Ant control on the Hibiscus Coast

Orewa's beachfront, the long Whangaparāoa Peninsula and the new suburbs at Millwater and Silverdale. Holiday homes that sit empty, fast-growing subdivisions, and just offshore an island where keeping Argentine ants out has been a long fight.

On the Hibiscus Coast, ant jobs fall into two groups: established coastal homes and baches in Orewa, Red Beach, Stanmore Bay and along the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, and the newer subdivisions at Millwater, Silverdale and Milldale. The coastal homes often sit empty for stretches, so colonies settle in undisturbed. The new suburbs get ants through earthworks and landscaping. And because Tiritiri Matangi lies just off the peninsula, moving ants anywhere near the Gulf is taken seriously.

The island offshore

Tiritiri Matangi, a few kilometres off the end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, is one of the Gulf's best-known open sanctuaries. DOC describes it as the only place Argentine ants have been successfully eradicated, after a long campaign; Landcare Research's guidance is more cautious, describing it as having come close. Either way, it shows how much effort keeping an island ant-free takes.

Auckland Council's pest plan bans moving Argentine ants to or within the Hauraki Gulf Controlled Area. Ferries to Tiritiri and other islands leave from Gulf Harbour. If you're heading out, check bags, chilly bins and gear first. See Hauraki Gulf islands and ants.

Baches and holiday homes

Many homes on the coast are holiday houses or baches used in summer and on long weekends. A house closed up for months is quiet and dry, and colonies move in. Owners often arrive for Christmas to find a trail across the bench. Booking a treatment a week or two before arriving gives the bait time to work, so the holiday doesn't start with ant patrol.

See before you move in and how long treatment takes for timing.

Coastal ground and salt air

Homes along Orewa Beach, Red Beach and the peninsula bays sit on sandier coastal soils near the beach and on clay further up the slopes. Sandy ground is easy for ants to dig and drains fast, so nests sit near the surface under paths and lawns. Salt winds shorten the life of some outdoor finishes, and joinery gaps open up on exposed homes. Products are kept away from the beach and stormwater outlets.

Millwater, Silverdale and Milldale

Inland, Millwater and Milldale are large planned suburbs built since the 2000s, with homes on slabs, paved paths, small landscaped sections and a lot of new planting. Silverdale's commercial area sits alongside. New subdivisions get ants from disturbed colonies, imported soil and plants, and unsealed service gaps. Trails run along slab edges into garages and under doors.

Sealing penetrations after the ants are treated, and keeping bark and soil back from the cladding, makes the result last. See ants in new builds.

Retirees, pets and gardens

The coast has many retirees and many keen gardeners. Roses, citrus and coastal plantings attract aphids and scale, which Argentine ants farm for honeydew. Sticky bands on trunks and treating ant routes at ground level help the garden; see ants farming aphids and scale. Treatments around pets and grandchildren use stations and out-of-reach placements.

Shakespear and the regional parks

At the tip of the peninsula, Shakespear Regional Park has a predator-proof fence and is managed as an open sanctuary. Homes nearby, and around other reserves on the coast, are close to sensitive areas. That's another reason treatments here are targeted at houses and boundaries, never broad spraying of gardens that border bush.

Gulf Harbour and the marina

Gulf Harbour, near the end of the peninsula, has a marina, apartments and townhouses around the water, and a ferry service to the city and the islands. Boats, sheds and marina storage are another way ants hitch rides, so lockers and gear stored ashore are worth checking before a trip out to Tiritiri or further into the Gulf. Apartment and townhouse blocks here get building-wide treatment through their body corporate.

Travel and price

The Hibiscus Coast is within the service area, and most addresses carry no travel charge; anything unusual is confirmed when you book. Treatment pricing follows the same Auckland pattern: published starting figures of roughly $210 to $255 incl GST for one area and roughly $340 to $400 incl GST for a full three-bedroom house inside and out. A bach that needs a pre-summer treatment is usually at the smaller end.

Ant control questions

Can you treat my bach while I'm away?

Outside work can often be done with gate access, and inside with a key arrangement. Ask when you book.

Do I need to worry about taking ants to Tiritiri Matangi?

Yes. Check bags and gear before leaving Gulf Harbour. Moving Argentine ants into the Gulf is prohibited.

Why does our new Millwater house have ants?

Disturbed colonies and landscaping bring them in. It's common in new subdivisions.
