About the service

Ant Free Auckland does one thing: ant control for Auckland homes, rentals and businesses, arranged by phone or online and carried out at your property by a technician who prices the work in writing first.

Ant Free Auckland is a mobile ant control service covering the Auckland region. You ring or send a request, we call back and arrange a visit, and a technician comes to the property, finds where the ants are coming from and gives you a written price before treating anything. The site exists because ant problems in Auckland are common, seasonal and often handled badly, and most people only need clear information and one good visit.

Why ants, and only ants

We concentrate on ants because they are Auckland's most persistent household insect and the one most often treated the wrong way. Argentine ants were first found here in 1990 and have spread across the region; white-footed house ants live inside wall cavities; and both shrug off the repellent sprays most people reach for first. Doing one pest properly beats doing ten pests in a hurry.

Focusing on one insect also keeps the information on this site deep rather than wide. There is a page for each species that comes indoors, each place ants nest in a house, each type of property, and each part of Auckland, plus explainers for the questions that come up after the first visit. If you also have cockroaches or rodents, say so when you call, and the technician will know before arriving.

What we will arrange

We arrange inspections and treatments for ants at houses, units, apartment buildings, rentals, food businesses, offices, schools and warehouses anywhere in the Auckland region. That includes once-off treatments, follow-up visits for species that need them, yearly spring programmes, and treatments timed for a move, a sale or the start of a tenancy.

  • inside and outside treatment of a home, with bait where the ants feed and non-repellent products where they enter
  • wall-cavity, sub-floor and roof-space work where the nest is in the structure
  • lawns, paths, pavers, decks and garden beds
  • whole-building treatment for body corporates, coordinated with the building manager
  • planned visits and written records for food businesses

What we won't do

Some requests we turn down on purpose, because they would be unsafe, unlawful or a waste of your money. We won't treat suspected fire ants: those are reported to MPI on 0800 80 99 66, by law and for good reason. We won't promise that a neighbourhood will be ant-free, because Landcare Research reports that eradicating an Argentine ant infestation on the mainland hasn't been achieved.

We also won't spray into power points or light fittings, blanket-spray lawns or bush edges, quote a firm figure over the phone for a property nobody has seen, or claim credentials we can't show you. If a problem is really rot, leaks or borer rather than ants, you'll be told so plainly and pointed to the right trade.

How a visit is run

A visit follows the same order every time, because the order is what makes it work. The technician asks what you've seen and used, inspects inside and out, identifies the species, follows trails to entry points and nests, explains what they've found and what it will cost, and only then treats. You get aftercare advice before they leave, and a follow-up if the species needs one.

Inspection is the part most often skipped by cheap quick jobs, and it is the part that decides whether the treatment lasts. A technician who sprays the skirting boards without walking the outside of the house is treating the symptom. What a treatment involves describes each step, and preparing for a treatment covers your side of it.

The rules every treatment follows

Pest control in New Zealand sits under several laws. Every product is applied to its label directions under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. Some urban pest products may only be applied by, or under the guidance of, a person holding a qualification such as the Urban Pest Control strand of the New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations (Level 3). The Consumer Guarantees Act requires services to be carried out with reasonable care and skill.

Local rules matter too. Auckland Council's Regional Pest Management Plan lists Argentine and Darwin's ants and bans moving or releasing them. Fire ants are notifiable under the Biosecurity Act. For rentals, Tenancy Services expects a property to be free of pests when a tenancy starts. You are welcome to ask the technician about qualifications and insurance before agreeing to anything; that's a normal question and a good one.

How prices are handled

You get a written price after the technician has seen the property and before any product goes down. The figures on this site are ranges that Auckland pest control businesses publish themselves, about $210 to $255 incl GST for one area or a small home and about $340 to $400 incl GST for inside and outside of a typical three-bedroom house, with sources on the cost page.

Nothing is added to your bill for using this site. If a quote doesn't say whether GST is included, ask; if it doesn't say whether a follow-up is included, ask that too. Reading an ant quote lists what a good quote names.

Where the work happens

The work happens at your property; there is no shop or office to visit. We cover the Auckland region from Warkworth and Matakana in the north to Pukekohe and Franklin in the south, and from Titirangi in the west to Howick and Botany in the east. Rural addresses can carry a travel charge, confirmed before booking, and island jobs are arranged case by case.

Each part of Auckland has its own page, because housing and ground change where ants live: villas on volcanic soil, slab-built subdivisions, bush-edge sections, coastal homes and lifestyle blocks. Start at ant control across Auckland.

How the information on this site is checked

Facts about ants come from Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, Te Ara, Auckland Council, the Department of Conservation, MPI, Tenancy Services and the National Poisons Centre, linked at the foot of each page with the date it was last checked. Where something is general practice rather than a published fact, the page says so. We don't publish reviews, star ratings, staff photos or "recent jobs", because we'd rather show you nothing than show you something we can't stand behind.

Who you deal with

You deal with us when you call or write, and with the technician at the property. How booking works explains who quotes, who treats and who invoices, and what to do if something isn't right. Our hours and contact details are on phone and email.

Ant control questions

Is Ant Free Auckland a franchise or a national chain?

No. It's an Auckland-only service for ants. It doesn't operate outside the Auckland region.

Do you sell ant products?

No. Technicians use trade products as part of a treatment. For shop products, see shop products and labels.

Can I ask the technician about their qualification?

Yes, and you should. Ask what qualification they hold and whether they're insured, before you agree to the work.
